that would be the mathematical symbol for infinity. it's also apparently some kind of new age symbol, from what i've heard..?
The symbol for infinity? Nawww....that's been around for a long time. "New Age" and it's like are relatively new, hence the name. Some of the ideas are old but merely repackaged in hip names; others are new ideas altogether.
As far as I know, the 8 on it's side to represent infinity is...*quite* old. I could be wrong, however.

AHEM! I believe the corrrrect term for such a symbol would be a Mobius. It always look like the eyeholes of a ski mask to me.
bad at math but knows what a Mobius is,

Have any of you B&B fans read the novels for B&B? Episode 5 Masques is a part of one of the books (Book 2 Masques by Ru Emerson). For you non-Beauty and the Beast fans, this is the Halloween ep where Catherine goes to a masked ball. Her dress is as gorgeous as Sarah's, and Catherine is wearing an owl mask (white, of course). The best part is yet to come...when Catherine first finds the mask...
page 118-119
"It hadn't made sense until she'd got it on: an owl's face looked back at her with her own eyes. It reminded her of one of those masks in the surreal ball scene in Labyrinth - the very thing she had wanted and had been unable to find."
There's also another reference concerning Halloween which I found very relevant...
page 153-154
"In the old religion, they called it Saowen...The night when the wall between the worlds grew thin and the spirits of the underworld walked the earth. A night of masks and balefires...When anything is possible, and nothing is quite as it seems."
One of the early advertisements for Labyrinth says, "Where everything seems possible, and nothing is what it seems." Maybe some of the posters say this, too.

Both Jareth and Erik, the Phantom of the Opera, are men of music who lead a beautiful young girl deep into their realms, each man offering the girl her dreams and making them possible. Erik gives singing lessons to Christine and makes her a star; Jareth offers Sarah the freedom to persue her fantasies. Sarah and Christine are both actresses recovering from the loss of a dearly loved parent; Christine's father having recently died, Sarah's mother having walked out. Underground there are five sub-basements below the Paris Opera House, where the Phantom resides. As Charles Hart describes in Andrew Lloyd-Webber's phenominal version,
and in this labyrinth where night is blind
the Phantom of the Opera is there inside my mind
Jim Henson has said that he believed Sarah's whole experience happened only in her own mind.
Phantom of the Opera also has its own Ballroom Masquerade:
         Masquerade! Paper faces on parade
Masquerade! You can fool any friend who ever knew you
Both Erik and Jareth are at times, threatening and tender to the women they love, and each loses the girl at the end.
Has anyone ever heard of a musical called "EFX"? It starred Michael Crawford (of "Phantom" fame) and is truly incredible. I got the CD about two years ago, and it is quite Labyrinthian. I might actually include some of the lyrics on my page, because the character MC plays is just too Jareth for words. Here's a bit he sings as he's describing the world of EFX:
"There's a world beyond reality
A place of light and dark.
A world beyond infinity
A realm of mind and heart.
It's a shadow world of fantasy
Upon which dreams are born.
It's a kingdom where illusion's
Given light and sound and form."
And the song "Tonight" (not the West Side Story one) makes me cry. It's very sad and could easily be a Jareth/Sarah duet (although Sarah never sang in the film).
